DP World Tour Championship preview

Or, what you need to do to get close to your heroes at the DP World Tour Championship

The DP World Tour Championship brings the top 60 golfers on the European tour, such as Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett and last year’s winner Henrik Stenson, to play on our doorstep. But as if that wasn’t exciting enough, golfing fans can also now get a chance to be within hitting distance of the stars by volunteering to help make the event a success.

Chief marshal Jenni Hoskins has been in charge of recruiting volunteers since 2011, and was inspired to get involved in organising the event after volunteering in 2005 and becoming part of “Team Tiger”.

“When Tiger Woods first came to Dubai, they had a Tiger Woods team of marshals,” says Hoskins. “They were so worried that things would go wrong that they made a designated team. I liked it so much I got hooked.”

This year, Hoskins is looking for an army of more than 200 marshals to help make sure players and spectators alike have a great experience on the course.

“Anyone can volunteer. You don’t need to be a golfer. You can be any age, male or female, but you must be willing, flexible and hard-working,” says Hoskins. “You can get quite close to your golfing heroes. Personally, I’ve been fortunate to see Seve Ballesteros, Fred Couples and Tiger Woods.”

Static marshals are positioned in a specific area, with the job responsibilities including keeping spectators quiet during play, making sure visitors stay within the designated zones and ball spotting when the occasional rogue hit comes clattering in. These are small tasks, but they make a massive difference to a top player.

Although volunteers get a privileged chance to get up close to the action, don’t expect to see much of the game if you do get signed up. “If you’re doing a good job, you don’t get to see a lot of actual golf,” says Hoskins. “Being a good volunteer is building a good relationship between you and the spectators, that’s what it’s about.”

To volunteer, email Jenni Hoskins, jengolfdxb@hotmail.com, with your personal details and a brief note stating why you want to get involved.
