Sunset Open surfing in Dubai dates confirmed

Time Out Dubai announces Sunset Open surfing in Dubai dates confirmed for the 2016 competition. The weekend festival will run March 18-19

Dubai’s surfers are frantically waxing their boards after it was finally revealed that the eighth Sunset Open will be held on the weekend of March 18 and 19.

The exact date of the Middle East’s only surfing contest has been kept under wraps while the organisers waited for the best waves, predicted to arrive on Friday and Saturday.

There will be six different categories of competition, with surfers as young as six set to rock up to Sunset Beach looking to show off their skills and impress the judges.

Stand-up paddleboarding (or SUP) will be making its debut at this year’s events, sponsored by Quiksilver, Roxy and DC, while the men’s and women’s Opens are expected to be as fiercely contested as ever.

There will be more than just aerials, floaters and turtle rolls to feast your eyes on at Surf House Dubai though, with other activities including yoga, beach fitness games, skateboarding competitions and live art demonstrations.

And the fun doesn’t end when the sun sets on this weekend’s thrilling action, with the Sounds by the Sea after-party coming to Cove Beach, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, on Friday, March 25 from 6pm. This shindig is being arranged with the help of Fair Played Music Dubai, a platform that promotes and supports local artists.

Free to watch, from Dhs100 to enter. Fri-Stat 7am-6pm. Surf House Dubai, Sunset Beach, Umm Suqeim. Register at premieronline.com (050 504 3020050 504 3020).
