Manny Pacquiao to fight again in the UAE

Boxing star’s tweet promises a return to the Emirates

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao looks set to finally take to the ring on our shores after tweeting “See you in the UAE for my next fight”.

The Filipino ace, a world champion in eight weight divisions, has caused a wave of excitement among fight fans here after appearing to confirm he will be taking on Jeff Horn in either Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

The “will he, won’t he?” saga concerning Pacquaio fighting in the UAE seems to have turned full circle after rumours he was going to make his comeback here last November proved wide of the mark.

However, his adviser Michael Koncz says the Horn fight originally pencilled in for Brisbane, Australia on April 22 would instead be held in one of the two emirates.

“We have executed the agreement in the morning and 100 percent the fight will be here in the UAE,” he is quoted as saying.

“It took us a while to get this deal together. There was a lot of confusion whether this is going to happen here in the UAE. [But] I’m here with full authority and power. I have been the marriage counsellor for Manny and we have developed a relationship. I’m involved in all aspects of what he does.”

Pacquaio, who is now a senator in his native Philippines, created a huge buzz of excitement when he and his wife visited Dubai in November 2015, meeting fans in The Dubai Mall and shooting some hoops in his role as player-coach of the Mahindra Enforcers.
