The toughest of all the mud-based running endurance challenges, Tough Mudder, is back for 2017 this December and registration is now open.
If you’ve not heard of Tough Mudder before, it’s known for being one of the most difficult sporting events in the world. Not only does the event consist of a 16-19km long run, through mud, but there are also a bunch of obstacles thrown in for good measure.
It’s as much about camaraderie as it is about physical endurance; with a number of obstacles requiring huge levels of teamwork in supremely challenging conditions. But people love it, because it’s muddy, challenging, and fun.
Some of the obstacles, on the other hand, do not look fun. Particularly the final challenge, appropriately-entitled Electroshock Therapy – which is, quite descriptively, a dash through live, exposed and dangling electricity wires. Get it wrong, and there’s a 10,000 volt zap coming your way – so keep your head down.
That said, the rest do sound fun, with challenges including a headlong plunge into ice-cold water and a 60-foot long gauntlet of slippery rotating barriers while submerged to the waist in water. More new obstacles will be announced in the coming weeks.
Tough Mudder is a bit of an institution, with more than 2.5 million fitness fans the world over partaking in global challenges year in, year out. You can pre-register now for this year’s event, and benefit from an early bird price until Saturday May 20. Tickets go on general sale on Sunday May 21 at noon.
