Now that the winter season is definitely in full flow, one of the coolest outdoors events in the world is coming to town.
Most famously played on the beaches of Brazil, beach football is heading to the shores of the UAE, as the Intercontinental Beach Soccer Cup is coming to Dubai, and the UAE national team will be taking the fight to some of the best teams in the world.
Everybody’s favourite footballing nation, Brazil, will be coming to town from Tuesday October 31 until Saturday November 4, as will Portugal, Mexico, Iran, Russia, Paraguay and Egypt, along with the UAE, at Business Bay.
And the UAE coach Mohamed Al Maazmi has said his side has a point to prove against many of the world’s best sides on sand.
Following an early exit to the tournament back in 2016, Al Maazmi has said the team has spent the last few months putting in the hard yards to get up to speed and ready for the biggest competition in the sport’s calendar.
“Step by step we are showing to the world our hard work that we are building up here day by day,” said Al Maazmi. “After the World Cup, a great number of our players went to Europe to play in different leagues and competitions so that helps us to gain more experience. For sure we are stronger than ever.”
And it’s not like the UAE doesn’t have history in the event, having finished third in 2012 and 2013, something that the nation’s coach is keen to build upon.
“It’s a good opportunity for us to show the hard work that we have put in for the last four months during training and it’s going to be great experience for myself and the players to feel the atmosphere that comes with playing in your own country, with family, friends and supporters watching.”
