But those days are gone (for another nine months at least) and it’s time to dig out your leggings and de-foist your running shoes.
By this point, we should all be in the thick of our New Year’s Resolutions, and according to statistics from Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, we aren’t doing too badly when it comes to fitness.
Recent figures revealed that the 30-day Dubai Fitness Challenge, launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, reached more than a million people, showing that we can actually be a rather active bunch when we put our minds to it.
According to the report, the total number of registered participants was 786,000 – which far exceeded the target of 100,000.
Over 90 percent of the participants said they achieved an average of at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, with 93 percent of them saying they would participate in the challenge again.
And furthermore, 91 percent said they would be advocates for the challenge, indicating the start of a fitness revolution in Dubai.
These figures tie in with statistics from fitness class membership programme GuavaPass, who have seen a huge surge in new memberships.
Between January 2017 and 2018, there was a massive 95 percent increase in people joining GuavaPass and a further 20 percent of people who had previously cancelled the service restarted their membership.
So far this month, 16 percent of new members have been male, 73 percent have been female and 11 percent prefer not to say.
Speaking to Time Out Dubai about the growth in numbers, GuavaPass General Manager, Johanna Bergsli, said “We have seen a fantastic growth for GuavaPass the past year in the UAE, and we expect this year to be even better.
“People in Dubai are conscious about their health and are always interested to get on the newest fitness trends. There are always new studios popping up, so there will surely be a lot of fun new concepts and classes in 2018.”

BODYATTACK is a high-energy fitness class with moves that cater for total beginners to total fitness addicts. The class combine athletic movements like running, lunging and jumping with strength exercises such as push-ups and squats. A Les Mills instructor will pump out energising tunes and lead you through the workout – challenging your limits in a good way, burning up to 730 calories and leaving you with a massive sense of achievement, and sweat-drenched work out gear.
