Think of yourself as a Super Saiyan, a part of the Justice League or a member of House Stark? Or maybe you don’t know what any of that means but you’re a fan of all things geeky anyway. Either way, there’s no better place to celebrate your love of comics/films/games than at Dubai’s annual Middle East Film and Comic Con. Taking place from Thursday April 11 until Saturday 13 at Dubai World Trade Centre, here’s what you’re in for... The Celebrities
It wouldn’t be a Comic Con without some A-list stars doing justice to our favourite comic characters, and this year’s MEFCC is delivering some of the best. First off, prepare for Shazam! The star of DC’s latest movie Zachary Levi is coming to town to sign all those autographs. Mike Colter, AKA Netflix’s Luke Cage, will be dishing out all the deets on his career over the event, and you can get up close and personal by watching him live on the MEFCC Theatre presenting celebrity panels and Q&As. He’ll be joined by none other than Katie Cassidy, who you’ll know from hit DC show Arrow playing Black Canary. Fan of The Walking Dead? Well, Aaron (Ross Marquand) will be making his way here to answer all your zombie-type questions. Even Game of Thrones’ craziest character Ramsay Bolton (welsh actor Iwan Rheon) will be there for more Q&A sessions. For those who watch any kind of animated series, think Timmy on The Fairly OddParents and Raven from Teen TItans, you’ll know all about Tara Strong, and she’ll be at MEFCC throughout the weekend, too. Panel sessions take place throughout the three-day event, so there’s plenty of time to get acquainted with the stars you’re always geeking out over.
If you thought a comic con didn’t know how to throw a party – You. Are. Wrong. With rocking performances, DJs remixing nostalgic grooves on the decks and dance-offs galore, MEFCC is going all out on its main stage this time round. Kicking off the entertainment is KLab Sound Team’s first-ever performance out of Japan, performing the classic tunes of the wildly popular Captain Tsubasa: Dream Team, while attendees can also expect the pounding rhythms of the multi-award winning, Universal Music signed band, The Boxtones. Been practising a few dance moves recently? Hop on stage and feel the rhythm of the Just Dance 2019 contest, where those who can bust a move best have a chance to win a Nintendo Switch. If you’re more a thinker than a dancer, test your mental mettle at IGN’s special gameshow quiz, and walk away knowing you’re a whizz (along with some prizes).
We see movie stars don the costume of our favourite heroes all the time, but they pale in comparison next to MEFCC’s cosplayers. These master-craftsman take months preparing their costumes, and it’s all because of the impressive cash prize of up to Dhs2,500 they stand to win, and even a trip to Japan at the World Cosplay Summit (WCS) 2019 Championship. Anyone is able to sign up, and there are different categories including comic book or movie characters along with best anime or gaming characters. Even the little ones 12 years and below have a chance to gear up. So if you think you can pull off a stunning bat-cowl or think you have that “Jon Snow” look, get yourself registered at www.mefcc.com. Not there to dress up? You can watch each cosplayer (in awe) on the main stage on Friday from 6pm until 10pm. These guys really do look the part.
There wouldn’t even be having a comic convention if it weren’t for all the talented artists that created our favourite characters in the first place, and some of the best of them are coming to MEFCC. International artist William Simpson, who’s worked on iconic characters such as Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Batman and Transformers will be making his way here, along with David Angelo Roman, currently the cover artist for Rick and Morty comic. We’re also getting James C Mulligan, a celebrity artist with a career-long relationship with Walt Disney himself, whose famed Disney art has been bought by the late Hugh Hefner and Johnny Depp. Been reading cult-hit comic Monstress? The award-winning artist of the comic Sana Takeda will be ready to answer your questions. There are plenty more coming, but MEFCC also offers other artists the chance to display their pieces of art at “Artist Alley,” and all you have to do is register for a table to showcase your craft. Who knows, you may just start a fanbase with your own work.
From learning how to create the perfect super villain in your very own comic to getting to know the ins and outs of making your own professional cosplay costumes, MEFCC is brimming with different workshops for anyone to attend. Learn the tricks of drawing a caricature from the pros, check out how the animation style and learn to draw “Rick and Morty” style, or get to know what it takes to become a gaming journalist.
This is a three-day event, so why not make a Staycation out of it? Especially since Rove Hotels is offering a 15 percent discount on rooms for those heading to MEFCC. You can be right next to the action (and not walk as far if you’re in full-costume) at Rove Trade Centre that has rooms from Dhs204 per night, while the movie buffs out there can head to Rove Downtown for Dhs420 per night, as it includes an unlimited movie pass at the exclusive Reel Cinemas in the hotel. All you have to do is use the promo code ‘MEFCC’ and the deal is all yours.
