Rate My Bake: Batch 8 judges' verdicts

Over the past few weeks we've been amazed by your entries to Time Out Dubai’s Rate My Bake, in association with Lurpak.

As well as posting entries from everyone who's sent an image here (and there are nearly 200), each week we’ve sending a selection to the judges to rate. The entries and feedback has been brilliant, with some top tips to take away for future baking from our expert panel.

And here is the eighth and last batch to have made it to the judges. Is your bake one of them? See what the judges had to say below.

At the start of  Rate My Bake we asked people to post their photos including the Lurpak product they used in baking, to be in with the chance of winning a special prize.

Marc Hayes from Lurpak has spent hours examining the gallery, picking the best sweet and savoury treats that included a Lurpak product, so stay tuned to find out who will win.

There will be one savoury winner and one sweet winner, and they'll both win a year's supply of Lurpak butter, plus afternoon tea for two courtesy of Jumeirah.

Stay tuned to see if your bake was picked by Lurpak as the winner. In the meantime check out these top bakes.

Shabnam Fatima’s walnut sourdough

Marc Hayes, Lurpak
Rating:
4/5
I’ve said it before, I’m a big fan of sourdough and this one with walnuts has made me hungry.

Rating:
4.5/5
Excellent texture, a thick crust with a soft, light middle. The air pockets are the sign of a well-made sourdough, and walnuts are a delicious addition.

Sahar Parham Al Awadhi, Burj Al Arab Jumeirah

This is lovely sourdough from the looks of the cut through. I like the addition of the walnuts, it adds extra texture and flavor.

Rating:
4.5/5
Nice looking sourdough, evenly baked air pockets, crunchy skin and a nice amount of walnuts in the bread, well done.

Amy Mathieson, Time Out Dubai
Rating:
4.5/5
This looks to have a wonderful texture and a crispy crust. The addition of walnuts will give depth to the flavour.

Sonya Jose’s Victoria sponge

Marc Hayes, Lurpak
Rating:
5/5
Sometime the classics are truly the best, I know it’s a simple sponge but the execution is perfect and strawberries and cream really fits in with the season.

Izu Ani, GAIA and carine
Rating:
4/5
This looks light and fluffy and the cream is perfectly piped – good job.

Sahar Parham Al Awadhi, Burj Al Arab Jumeirah
Rating:
3/5
Lovely and equal cake layers. Seems like a nice amount of cream and jam filling. Overall well done.

Alex Stumpf, BB Social Dining
Rating:
3/5
A naked cake, which shows good baking skills. The cake has nice colour and height. It could be a bit dry when eating if you only fill the middle layer of the cake, though.

Amy Mathieson, Time Out Dubai
Rating:
4/5
This is a classic teatime treat. It looks lovingly prepared, nicely coloured and has two even layers. The decoration is simple but charming.

Georgina Alfardan’s Japanese cheesecake

Marc Hayes, Lurpak
Rating:
4/5
Japanese cheesecake is so on trend. I love this technique of combining soufflé with cheesecake. It needs skill to bake properly without the eggy taste overpowering the whole cake

Izu Ani, GAIA and carine
Rating:
4/5
This looks beautiful, light and fluffy. Well done.

Sahar Parham Al Awadhi, Burj Al Arab Jumeirah
Rating:
3/5
A lovely cheesecake slice and the accompaniment of berries complements the richness of the cake and brings a touch of freshness to the overall experience.

Alex Stumpf, BB Social Dining
Rating:
3/5
Japanese cheesecake is not easy to do, you bake it in a water bath to achieve a uniform rising of the cake. It's meant to be super fluffy so its jiggling but this one looks a little firm.

Amy Mathieson, Time oUt Dubai
Rating:
4/5
This cheesecake looks light and has the texture you'd hope for. It’s prettily presented, too.

Vanessa Sequira’s buttery sausage and cheese stromboli

Marc Hayes, Lurpak
Rating:
4/5
This stromboli is perfectly baked, while the filling looks to have the right ratio to bread. I love the golden brown crust.

Izu Ani, GAIA and carine
Rating:
3/5
Lovely texture and shape, don’t be shy with your fillings though.

Sahar Parham Al Awadhi, Burj Al Arab Jumeirah
Rating:
2/5
The bread to filling ratio is off for a stromboli. There should be a significantly larger amount of meat and and cheese where the bread will likely overpower the flavors of the filling.

Alex Stumpf, BB Social Dining
Rating:
3/5
Not your traditional bread, or ingredients to make a bread, but I like the creativity. The bread looks soft, yet its uneven in layers and the outside crust is could be more colored to get a crunch. Needs refining.

Amy Mathieson, Time Out Dubai
Rating:
3/5
This is an inventive bake and the bread looks like it has a good texture. There could be more filling, you can never have enough cheese.

Ray D Silva’s cookie pie

Marc Hayes, Lurpak
Rating:
5/5
Now this is what taking the humble cookie to the next level looks like. So simple but indulgent, love the creativity.

Izu Ani, GAIA and carine
Rating:
4/5
Wonderful consistency, the cookie looks crispy yet chewy with creative, tasty toppings.

Sahar Parham Al Awadhi, Burj Al Arab Jumeirah
Rating:
2/5
While I like the idea of a cookie pie, it seems that this one is just a filling of whipped cream topped with store bought chocolate bars. I would have liked to seem the inside and the extra thought put into this pie.

Alex Stumpf, BB Social Dining
Rating:
3/5
This looks interesting and tasty, it seems the cream has a good texture for it to hold the toppings.

Amy Mathieson, Time Out Dubai
Rating:
3.5/5
Wow, this looks like quite the treat. The crust looks even the whole way around and there’s loads going on there with heaps of toppings.
