Sofia Vergara interview

Modern Family star shares the inside gossip from the new OSN show

Time In

As far as sitcoms go, it’s a simple concept, mocking the everyday things we all endure as a family and the complications that ensue. However, the simple ideas are often the best. Now with several Emmy awards under its belt, Modern Family is back for a second season; we met frontwoman Sofia Vergara to get the inside track on playing a feisty Colombian mother.

How much fun is it to play Gloria?
It’s great fun. I’m Colombian, she’s Colombian. She’s loud. I’m loud. She’s crazy and, well, my son refers to me as ‘that crazy woman who lives with me’.

What has been the biggest challenge in moving across to English-language television?
Well, the accent, of course. It’s hard sometimes when you get excited or you’re into the character to think of the words and the pronunciation. It’s kind of a challenge for me every time I’m doing a scene. One of the things I’m very proud of is the fact that I’m representing Latin culture with an accent so strong that I don’t understand half the things I say myself, but it’s good that there can be a loud Latina woman acting crazy on worldwide television.

You had a successful film career before you switched to TV. Do you plan to return to the big screen?
Yeah, of course – I love it. I take the opportunities and I do whatever I can, but I love doing movies, too. I still have a lot of things to do.

After battling cancer in 2002, do you see the world differently?
It was a tough thing for me, but it made me much stronger. I have a family and I’m a mother, and I knew I could get through it. I’ve been through it all so I don’t take life’s little dramas too seriously. I say, ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff, because there’s bigger stuff that can really make you sweat.’

How do you maintain your fabulous figure? Do you have to hit the gym regularly?
I hate the gym. But I also know that at my age – I’m 40 – I have to do it to maintain my figure. When I can, I do Latin dancing for exercise because it’s so much fun and I love the music. I believe you can party in moderation; you can drink in moderation and eat in moderation. Don’t get crazy. You can work out too much and look horrible. You get away with being less thin when you’re Latina, so I’m lucky.
