Dubai Airport at 52 years old

We give a shout-out to DXB as it continues to grow

Since most of us will be setting off on our Eid getaways from DXB, we thought we’d give it a shout-out: the airport is 52 years old this October, and is now the world’s tenth busiest airport. According to Airport Council figures, 23.2 million passengers passed through the travel hub between January and May 2012, hoisting Dubai up three places in the rankings – that’s a 13.2 percent increase in passenger traffic, the most recorded by any airport other than Bangkok (14.1 percent).

To cope with this growth, in September 2012 Dubai Airports announced a Dhs28.8 billion airport and airspace expansion plan, which will boost capacity at Dubai International from 60 million to 90 million passengers a year by 2018. This plan also involves building an extra 675,000 sq m of terminal and concourse space – twice the size of London Heathrow’s Terminal 5.
