Ice trucking in Iceland with Arctic Trucks

Time Out Dubai reviews an alternative to dune bashing in Dubai... how about ice trucking in Iceland with Arctic Trucks, one of the more unique holiday ideas

Dune bashing in a 4x4 is loads of fun, but if you’ve ever wanted to take your desert escapades to the next level, now is your chance.

Top Gear’s favourite Icelandic off-roader and general manager of Arctic Trucks ME, Hjalti Hjaltason, is giving Dubai’s petrolheads the chance to let loose in the glaciers of his fatherland.

After a successful trial run in Norway last year, Hjaltason and his team from Arctic Trucks are taking their modified Toyota Hiluxes on a guided self-drive tour to some of the planet’s trickiest terrain – and they want you on board.

“During the first trip, we came up with the idea for people who are not faint-hearted; a great adventure – the complete opposite of doing the desert runs,” Hjaltason says.

“So I thought, okay, let’s devise a trip from Dubai to Iceland with everything included: snack foods, restaurants, mountain cabins – everything. And we spread the word and the first seats were snapped up.”

Hjaltason will be guiding the Dubai daredevils on the five-day trip that will not only prove a huge challenge but also offer the chance to take in some of Iceland’s finest tourist destinations, including the Unesco World Heritage Site Thingvellir National Park.

The group will be treading the same path the Top Gear trio did in 2007 and Hjaltason has a warning for those who don’t respect their surroundings.

“What I’m a little bit scared about is that on the first day, people will try and do all the same tricks they do in the desert,” he says.

“It’s not going to happen. [Even] Jeremy Clarkson learned very quickly that if he was to stay alive at the North Pole, he had better keep the car in one piece. It could be tough for them, but at the same time, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
